Sometimes, wisdom teeth grow in perfectly. Other times, they become impacted, misaligned, or painful and you will need to undergo wisdom tooth removal in Scottsdale, AZ. Our dentists at Dental Center of Scottsdale can evaluate your teeth and determine whether or not you need this procedure.

When is Wisdom Tooth Removal Necessary?

One of our dentists may recommend you undergo wisdom tooth removal for the following reasons:

  • You’re in pain or are in danger of infection or abscess
  • Your wisdom teeth are impacted
  • There isn’t enough room for your wisdom teeth to fully erupt
  • Your wisdom teeth are causing or are in danger of causing overcrowding or misalignment
  • You’re having sinus issues due to wisdom tooth eruption
  • You’re having jaw pain or jaw issues
  • You have inflamed or swollen gums

How is Wisdom Tooth Removal Performed?

Before surgery is scheduled, you’ll meet with your dentist for an examination and to discuss your health history. We may recommend dental sedation if the teeth are not being removed surgically. If surgical removal is necessary, you may be under partial or full anesthesia. We will fully explain the procedure to you, including what to do before and after the procedure.

On the day of the procedure, you will need to arrange for transportation to and from our dentist’s office. The procedure may take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the extraction type. One of our dentists may use dissolvable stitches and gauze to prevent or control bleeding after the procedure.

After Wisdom Tooth Removal

You will spend some time in the recovery area before being released, just to ensure that you’re feeling okay and there were no complications. When home, you can use ice packs, ibuprofen, and moist heat to control pain and discomfort. Eat only soft foods, and avoid using a straw or drinking hot liquids. Do not smoke, drink alcohol, or eat hard foods or hard candy. You can brush your teeth on the second day after your wisdom tooth removal, but don’t brush or rinse too aggressively. If you have worsening pain or any signs of complications, contact us immediately. Most people can return to work and their normal daily routine after 2-3 days.
