What Happens at a Dental Exam?

If it’s your child’s first time visiting a family dentist in Scottsdale, AZ, he or she may be comforted by knowing exactly what to expect during their first dental exam. Explaining these steps to your child before he visits the dentist can ease anxiety and make the visit more comfortable and successful for all involved.

Initial Paperwork and Medical History

When you arrive for your first visit with us as your dentist in Scottsdale, AZ, you’ll need to fill out paperwork and provide a full medical history of your child. This includes health issues, past surgeries, and any oral health issues you may have noticed.

Thorough Examination of Teeth and Gums

One of our dentists will then do a thorough examination of your child’s teeth and gums. Your child will sit in the dental chair with his mouth open. If necessary or beneficial, our dentist may recommend sedation dentistry to calm your child’s anxiety during the examination. While wearing gloves, the dentist will make a visual and physical assessment of the health of your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw.

Dental X-Rays Taken

We may decide that dental x-rays are necessary. Dental x-rays allow us to determine if there are any issues with the way your child’s teeth are growing, or any signs of oral health problems or disease. Your child may need to wear a special mouthpiece during the x-ray procedure.

Professional Dental Cleaning

One of our dentists will then perform a complete, professional teeth cleaning for your child. This includes removing plaque buildup and polishing the teeth. Your child will rinse with a fluoride treatment afterwards.

Education

After the cleaning, we will provide your child with education on proper oral hygiene. He will give your child a new toothbrush and discuss the proper way to brush and floss and how often it should be done.
