Emergency Dental Care for Knocked-Out Teeth
Whether from a sports injury or a tumble down the stairs, your teeth may fall victim to physical trauma. An avulsed, or knocked-out tooth, requires emergency dental care in Mesa right away. At Dental Center of Scottsdale & Mesa, Dr. Jonathan Kalika, DDS, and his team are often able to save knocked-out teeth if the patient can get to our office quickly enough and knows what to do in the meantime.
Immediate Steps to Take for an Avulsed Tooth
Having a tooth knocked out can be a traumatic experience. Since time is of the essence, it’s important to know what to do just in case it ever happens to you. First, pick up your knocked-out tooth by touching only the crown (white part). Do not touch the tooth roots. If the tooth is dirty, you can rinse it gently with water or milk, but do not scrub it and do not use soap or any other cleaning products.
If possible, you can reinsert the tooth, root-first, into the empty socket. Try to face the crown the right way. Bite down gently on a piece of sterile gauze or a paper towel to hold the tooth in place and soak up any blood.
It may not always be possible to reinsert the tooth; don’t try to force it in. You can place the tooth into a clean cup or other container, and cover it with milk or saline (not water). If you don’t have any milk or saline handy, cover the tooth with your own spit. You could also tuck your tooth into your cheek or under your tongue to keep it moist.
